O'ahu, The Heart of Hawaii......
Having just recently returned from a week on the beautiful island of O’ahu, I was surprised to discover just how much this multicultural island has to offer.
Hosted by The O’ahu Visitors Bureau and Classic Vacations, I learned about the rich history of the island. While it’s best known for the hustle and bustle of Honolulu, Waikiki Beach and Pearl Harbor, the Windward Coast, the North Shore, and the Leeward Coast offer a more laidback vibe and magical landscape. Steeped in cultural tradition, O’ahu truly is “The Heart of Hawaii.”
Whether you favor the flavors of Iron Chef Morimoto’s Cuisine at the newly designed Alohilani Resort with its outstanding views of Diamond Head and Waikiki Beach or the rich heritage of “The Pink Palace of the Pacific,” the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, I’d be hard pressed to pick a favorite in terms of O’ahu hotels as there are so many amazing properties to choose from.

Aloha!
More than just hello and goodbye, Aloha is a feeling or a welcome greeting of affection.
A Royal Treat
You can enjoy a sprinkle of condensed milk and fresh pineapple on top of your Coconut Shave Ice. Stop by Vintage Shave Ice at the Royal Hawaiian Village for a classic royal treat that you won’t find at home!
A Whales Tale
The warm waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands make up one of the world’s most important humpback whale habitats. While these whales spend much of their time in the waters off the coast of Alaska, they migrate south to breed, calve, and nurse. Once only a few hundred of these amazing mammals remained, but thanks to federal protection laws, it is estimated that approximately 5,000 to 6,000 Humpback Whales of the North Pacific make this journey each year. They can be found off the coast of the Hawaiian Islands in December and sometimes even as early as November.
The Mighty Mo!
The Battleship USS Missouri, now a National Historic Site and memorial to those who served our nation, resides in Pearl Harbor and is the last battleship commissioned by the United States. It is best known as the site where Japan surrendered which ultimately brought an end to WWII.
Hollywood Back Lot
On the north side of the island, nestled between the beautiful waters of the Pacific and majestic mountains, Kualoa Ranch is the site many movie sets. I’m sure you’ve heard of Jurassic Park or how about Hawaii Five-0?
History
Iolani Palace
History abounds on the island of O’ahu. Built in 1882, the nations only royal residence, Iolani Palace was built by King Kalakaua. Plan your visit on a Friday so you can enjoy the music of the Royal Hawaiian Band. King Kamehameha III founded this spectacular band in 1836.
Queen Emma’s Summer Palace
We enjoyed a visit to Queen Emma’s Summer Palace. This historic landmark dates back to 1857. The Palace was once a summer home to Queen Emma and her husband King Kamehameha IV and their son Philip. There isa gift shop onsite and guided docent tours are available during summer months.
Surf’s Up
Located on O’ahu’s North Shore, Laniakea Beach is a hot spot for surfers when the surf is up in January. Sea turtles who enjoy warming themselves in the sun of the beautiful beach and feed on the algae that adorns the rocky coast love it, too.
For families, a day at the Polynesian Cultural Center is a must. There are different packages available including admission to the 6 Island Villages, canoe rides, native shows and an evening Ali’l Luau!
